St Augustine's Gate inside the City Wall View of St Augustine's Gate from inside the City Wall by Henry Ninham dated 1791, engraved by Walter Hagreen. For more than 450 years all traffic, including drovers and their cattle, had to pass through this narrow arch at the top of St Augustines Street, which could be closed by a portcullis at night. Weary wayfarers and thirsty drovers could wash the dust from their throats at many taverns and inns in the parish, two of which are depicted here, The Royal Oak (left) and The Catherine Wheel (right).
