St Augustine's Norwich | Jousting in the Gildencroft
Edward III jousting in the Gildencroft
On St Valentine's Day, 1340, King Edward III, Queen Philippa and their eldest son Prince Edward the Black Prince attended a grand tournament in Norwich, possibly held in the Gildencroft, a part of which, near the city wall, was known as the Jousting Acre. This fanciful depiction of the event is from a Victorian children's book The Glory and Sorrow of Norwich by Matilda Maria Blake, published by Jarrold & Sons in 1899. The talented Miss Blake also provided the book's illustrations.
